Who can get the most points, go! Oh my gosh a badge, hooray! What else can I do today? Running Don 13th to mass. Popping in and out of buildings. Grabbing some scream (Thats ice cream shortened, but its not so short now that I’ve gone And explained it). Alas, I haven’t grabbed scream since last summer; I can still dream. Oh, another badge: five coffee places. I must be addicted to caffeine. Henry’s, la prima tazza, Milton’s, aimees coffeehouse, Java break! Where else can I go?! Panera here I come. And now that I’ve gone a first world problem. I realize I didn’t check in on foursquare and my morals refuse to let me make an exception. Danforth! I meant Dangit. Friggin autocorrect.

If your schedule looks similar to this, and suddenly external happenings outside of your control pile up and the world around you feels like its crumbling apart, you’ve experienced burn out.
In this seemingly do or die culture, an individual can accomplish great things. The capability of disciplining the body and mind, to pull off mentally exhausting tasks for extended periods of time, is tempting. I say go for it, but be hyper aware of stress levels, and know when to take a breather. Everyone is familiar with stress induced deaths. It’s basically a norm in our part of the world. How to avoid this?
Have some
fun
[fuhn] noun, verb, funned, fun·ning, adjective–noun
1. something that provides mirth or amusement: A picnic would be fun.-http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fun-
Wake up and actually wake up. Brush my teeth, shower, do my hair. That’s not the actual chronological order. Morning coffee should never follow a tooth scrub down. Read the newspaper, come to, schedule. Thats mostly how it happens every morning. Routine, systematic. Smile, laugh, love, relate, intuite, comprehend, think. These are optional. These are individual.
Women are like cigarettes
You take one out.
And when you first put it to your lips
It makes you short of breath and a little giddy.
Women are like cigarettes
You should be over 16 to enjoy them.
Some are too strong for you.
French ones give you a headache.
Rich men can afford…
I like you, I love you. I’m not a fan, I hate it. Notice the differences? The level of attraction or dislike varies greatly from word to word. Now compare the original phrases with one minor change in pronoun: We like you, we love you. We’re not fans, we hate it. Language plays an enormous role in understanding ourselves and each other. Dissecting your comprehension of the words around you can get the gears in motion to recognizing tendencies, behavioral patterns, and habits. Who was speaking when you read ‘I’ in the above examples? Me(author), you(you), or the other(hypothetical reader)? Who was involved in ‘we’? everyone you know, everyone you don’t know? Consistent determination towards understanding how one comprehends language will not only help you understand yourself, but it will help others understand you. To those who decide to question their stances in order to obtain better understanding, welcome aboard. To those who will decide to remain ignorant, I provide for you one of my favorite quotes, “what the fuck have you done lately?” - Wanted (2008)
On a side note,
I’m amazed everyday at how connected our world has become, not only can we share ideas and thoughts, but we can do it instantly. It’s amazing that in between two pieces of plastic, The access to knowledge obtained throughout history and around the world exists, available to all who are interested, willing, and able.

Images have a way of firing off a million synapses in our mind. ‘A picture’s worth a thousand words’ is one of the most straightforward sentences you’ll run into in your life. One reason art is so great: it puts subjectivity in the forefront; healthy subjectivity. Individuals either want to own and control their environment or disown their identity to the collective, but it doesn’t work out that way in most circumstances. It’s similar to learning about monopolies and perfect competitions in an economics class, neither exist. The concepts need to be understood in order for the gray area to be intuited.
Spoken word does not interpret out to words that are spoken. Believing this would be similar to believing that smoking is bad for you. People that smoke know it’s bad for them, but the enjoyment they receive outweighs the long term effects. People that don’t smoke, can’t believe people who do smoke, smoke. To relieve the pain of translating this comparison of spoken word to smoking, I’ll attempt to tie the two through words instead of ideas.
People who read poetry out loud attempt an amazing thing; be it to bare their soul through words or to make an audience laugh. Either way they put themselves into their words. For some this comes easily, but for others it can be a very personal experience of overcoming fears, judgement, or even old habits.
People who hear about others who are involved in poetry react in one of three ways: how can I get involved, I’m not interested personally, or Fuck off. Understandably, there are grey areas in between these three responses.
Similarly, there are smokers who smoke because they want to, and there are other smokers who smoke because others do. The three responses remain the same.
The person who actually stands up in front of a crowd and speak the words that they physically recorded, went through many steps to actually get to that stage. The act of reading is almost the most insignificant point, but it’s definitely the most rewarding. I encourage anyone who reads this post to write three sentences on an actual piece of paper about an idea and then write three sentences about each of your original sentences. Expand for as long as you can! *smoke break*
